How to Get to Echuca Luxury Houseboats

We’re moored at Riverboat Dock in the heart of the historic Port of Echuca, one of Victoria’s most charming river towns, and the perfect place to leave the everyday world behind. Getting here from Melbourne to Echuca is easier than you might expect: it’s around 220 km and roughly 2.5–3 hours by car, well within reach from regional Victoria and interstate too. 

For most guests, the drive up through the Murray country is where the wind-down begins.

Getting Here

1. Self-Drive (Recommended)

For most guests travelling from Melbourne to Echuca, driving is the simplest and most flexible option. The most popular route heads north via the Calder Freeway through Bendigo, which is a scenic run that takes around 2.5–3 hours depending on where you’re starting from. Once you arrive, parking is one less thing to worry about: we offer secure lock-up car storage at just $5 per vehicle per night, so your car is safe and sound while you’re out on the Murray.

For arrival timing, hirer information notes that houseboats are available from 3pm, and your driving lesson must commence by 4:30pm, so factor that in when planning your departure.

 

2. Hire a Car

Flying into Melbourne first? Hiring a car and driving the final leg yourself is a great way to enjoy the journey from Melbourne to Echuca at your own pace. The same secure lock-up car storage applies, $5 per vehicle per night, so there’s no need to stress about where to leave it once you’re ready to hit the water.

 

3. Train & Coach (V/Line)

Prefer to leave the driving to someone else? V/Line runs a regular service from Southern Cross Station in Melbourne to Bendigo by train, with a connecting coach (Route 304) through to Echuca and Moama from there. We’d recommend booking reserved seating in advance, particularly on weekends and during school holidays. From Echuca station, the dock is a short trip away.

Always check current departure times and confirm connections directly on the V/Line website before you travel; timetables can change seasonally.
